Aquatic therapy is an alternative to the more traditional outpatient therapies.

Aquatic therapy uses the waters properties to facilitate and improve muscle tone and strength, endurance, flexibility, balance, coordination, and improve the quality and performance of movement.

The waters buoyancy is an excellent medium that facilitates movement, balance, and coordination. Water also provides an exceptional source of resistance that allows for muscle and core strengthening. The hydrostatic pressure from water assists in improving the body’s joint position (proprioceptive) awareness. Additionally, the waters ability to reduce the gravitational force provides a modality that cannot be experienced on land.

Aquatic therapy is an excellent therapeutic activity for individuals of all abilities. There are several flotation devices such as bars, noodles, vests, and floats available to assist an individual in participation. Aquatic therapy requires no swimming ability; therefore it is possible for non-swimmers to participate.

Client screening will be completed by an Occupational Therapist to assure development of an appropriate individualized aquatic program. Aquatic therapy is not recommended for everyone however a variety of individuals can participate and benefit from aquatic therapy.
